General Description: Milo Gibson is an unusual Fall ripening apple that has a rich and sweet licorice/anise flavor. It comes to us by way of Milo Gipson, one of the founders of NAFEX. It's popular amongst collectors and gets a lot of attention during apple tastings. Milo gibson is definitely for sweet apple lovers, so If you like tart apples you will want to skip this one.
Origin: As per Fedco trees, this apple is possibly from Oregon. Originated from Milo Gibson (1905-1974), one of the founders of the North American Fruit Explorers (NAFEX). It's not clear if he discovered or bred this apple, or if it might have been renamed.
Adaptability: We are trying this apple in the Cloudforest orchards, stay tuned. It's most likely never been grown in Santa Cruz county before.

Fruit Description: Milo gibson is roundish, oblate - slightly flattened stem and stern, reminiscent of a MacIntosh shape. Skin has a similar coloring as a Ben Davis: muted yellow, with a fairly solid blush of red, overlaid with some stripes of slightly darker red.
Fruit Flavor: Fedco Trees describes this apple as a "dessert apple with a unique and wonderfully strong licorice flavor. Not tart but very rich, full and sweet." As is the case with many anise and licorice flavored apples, the flavor can be very pronounced in one apple off the tree but almost undetectable in another one.
Growth Habit: Vigor: T1T2T3
Harvest: Ripens mid to late Fall, most likely early Fall in California.
Usage: Dessert apple, but could contribute to the sugar content in cider.
